  • BASF's sustainable products from certified sites will be available worldwide
One year after the launch of its ambitious sustainability roadmap, BASF Monomers celebrates the successful certification of its production sites in all regions of the world. With the addition of the Diphenylmethane Diisocyanate (MDI) site in Geisma, Louisiana, USA, to the ranks of ISCC PLUS and REDcert2 certified sites1, BASF can now offer its customers ISCC PLUS and/or REDcert2 certified isocyanates and polyamides worldwide. Dr. Kham Nguyen, President of BASF's Monomers Division, said: "The achievements of the past year demonstrate our seriousness in driving the sustainable transformation of our Monomers and the various customer industries we serve. We continuously strive to improve our product portfolio so that we can continue to meet the high standards of international certification bodies. Achieving these certifications at all regional sites means that we are able to deliver more sustainable products to our customers around the world and help them achieve their sustainability goals, wherever they are located. I am very pleased that we are now ready to offer our US customers certified more sustainable isocyanate solutions that are locally manufactured." As a result, we are always able to provide our customers with the most suitable solution for their product portfolio. " The sustainability roadmap is well underway – 345 products are certified as sustainable In January last year, BASF Monomers committed to offering circularity solutions for each of its major product lines by 2025. One year later, the business unit is well on its way to delivering on this promise. As of February 2024, approximately 70% of the business unit's product portfolio, including isocyanates, polyamides, glues and resins, precursors and inorganic chemicals, offers low-carbon footprint products3 based on chemical cycles (Ccycled®) or biomass balance2 (BMB), or even net-zero products (zero carbon emissions and renewable feedstocks). Currently, BASF Monomers offers a total of 345 certified sustainable alternatives for industries such as food packaging, textiles, automotive, construction, wood adhesives, etc. New technologies to accelerate sustainable transformation In addition to offering more sustainable alternatives, BASF's Monomers business unit is constantly developing new solutions such as polyol recovery. In addition, the division develops new proprietary technologies to drive sustainable transformation in the industries it serves. With the new Loopamid® product, BASF Monomers has developed an innovative solution for increasing circularity in the fashion industry and recycling used textiles made from polyamide-6. With this cutting-edge technology, used fibers and materials can be recycled many times to make new yarns, while retaining the material properties of conventional virgin grade polyamides. Multiple operational excellence measures have reduced tons of CO2 emissions In addition to significantly increasing its product portfolio, BASF Monomers has successfully implemented several initiatives at its production sites in all regions to further reduce CO2 emissions. These CO2 reduction measures help the sector make an important contribution to BASF's ambitious sustainability goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. Thanks to BASF's globally integrated network, a number of high-impact measures have helped to significantly reduce CO2 emissions. For example, a waste heat recovery project by BASF Polyurethane Co., Ltd. in Shanghai is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by 34,000 tons per year. 1 REDcert2 and ISCC PLUS are sustainable standard certifications for the use of sustainable biomass as feedstock in the chemical industry. Certification according to these standards determines the sustainability of the biomass used and puts it into the production system in the required quantities. The certification also ensures that sustainable biomass is appropriately incorporated into the respective marketed products. These certifications are issued on the basis of an on-site audit conducted by an independent auditor. 2 Ccycled®: Traditional fossil feedstocks for the production of BASF's products are replaced by recyclable feedstocks. These raw materials come from chemically recycled plastic waste or used tires from BASF's integrated production chain. With a certified mass balance method, recycled feedstocks, such as pyrolysis oil, are assigned to specific Ccycled® products. Recycled raw materials cannot be measured in BASF's mass balance products. BMB: For biomass-balanced products, BASF replaces the fossil raw materials normally required to produce the product with 100 percent renewable raw materials in its integrated production plant. While renewable carbon cannot be physically identified in the final product, renewable content can be assigned to the product through a certified mass balance approach. 3 Low-carbon footprint products reduce product carbon footprint by at least 30% compared to their respective fossil-based products. The product carbon footprint calculation follows the requirements and guidance of ISO 14067: 2018. In the methodology review, TÜV Rheinland has confirmed that the product carbon footprint (SCOTT) calculation methodology developed and used by the BASF Group complies with ISO 14067: 2018 and the Product Carbon Footprint Guidelines of the Together for Sustainability (TfS) initiative, and reflects cutting-edge technology (ID-Nr.0000080389: BASF SE - Certipedia). • Rising demand for sustainable building materials drives European polyurethane market development
Source - Global Polyurethane Network According to reports, the European polyurethane market value is expected to reach US$26.24 billion by 2024. The rising demand for sustainable building materials has become an important driving force for the development of the industry. The development of terminal industries such as construction, automobiles, transportation, furniture and bedding is the main driving force of the polyurethane industry. It is expected that the continuous development of the construction industry will be the main driving force. The construction industry in Eastern European countries such as Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia will have great development, thereby driving the rise in demand for rigid polyurethane foam. Rigid foam consumes the most, accounting for 30% of the European market in 2015. Financial incentives to reduce energy consumption will promote the development of rigid foam. In 2015, the European polyurethane market size was 4.91 million tons, and it is expected to reach 6.9 million tons in 2024, with a compound annual growth rate of 3.8%. Polyurethane is the most consumed in the construction industry, accounting for more than 35% of the total in 2015. It is expected that the electrical appliance field will have the largest growth, at 5.3%. Germany had the largest demand for polyurethane in 2015, accounting for an estimated 17.5% of the market share. As a major automobile production and export country, Germany has the largest demand for rigid foam. In 2015, the demand for rigid foam accounted for 30% of polyurethane.

  • In-depth analysis: current situation and prospects of polyurethane industry at home and abroad
    1) Polyurethane foam Polyurethane foam is widely used in thermal insulation, furniture production, etc. According to data from Allied Market Research, my country's polyurethane foam (including flexible foam and rigid foam) sales volume was 1.3783 million tons in 2019, and is expected to reach 1.6526 million tons in 2022, with an average annual compound growth rate of 6.24% from 2019 to 2022. The guidance of the "Thirteenth Five-Year Plan" development plan for the plastics processing industry points out that the "import substitution" strategy should be vigorously implemented to strive for the main products and accessories of the plastics processing industry to meet the needs of economic and social development, especially the high-end fields, by 2025. Some products and technologies have reached World leading level. 2) Polyurethane elastomer Polyurethane elastomers are divided into casting type, thermoplastic type and mixing type according to the production process. They are widely used in steel, conveyor belts, papermaking rubber spokes and other fields. In recent years, the proportion of polyurethane elastomers in polyurethane products in my country has been increasing. In 2015, the consumption of polyurethane elastomers was 860,000 tons, a year-on-year increase of 4.2%. In 2018, it rose to 1.07 million tons. The consumption continued to increase from 2019 to 2022. The reason is mainly due to the large-scale use of thermoplastic elastomers in the automotive field and the construction industry. (TPE) materials have driven the development of the industry. 3) Polyurethane coating In 2015, the consumption of polyurethane coatings was about 1.65 million tons, accounting for 16% of the sales volume of polyurethane products. In 2021, it will reach 2.45 million tons, accounting for about 16%. At present, there are more than 60 kinds of polyurethane coatings, and the production enterprises are concentrated in coastal areas. 4) Polyurethane synthetic leather slurry Synthetic leather PU slurry includes dry synthetic leather and wet synthetic leather. At present, my country is the center of the world's artificial leather and synthetic leather industry. In 2019, my country's synthetic leather pulp production accounted for nearly 85% of the world. In recent years, the consumption of synthetic leather slurry in my country has continued to decline. The reasons are: First, solvent-based synthetic leather slurry will pollute the environment. Under the advocacy of green environmental protection, the demand and consumption of synthetic leather slurry has been suppressed. Second, fierce competition among enterprises has compressed the industry`s profit margins. In the future, the industry will innovate and popularize ecological and functional synthetic leathers such as water-based synthetic leather and solvent-free synthetic leather, improve the environmental protection of artificial leather and synthetic leather, and enrich the functionality. 2.4 Domestic polyurethane import and export In terms of import volume, it increased slightly from 2017 to 2018, declined in 2019, continued to decline in 2020, and rebounded in 2021; in terms of export volume, it was similar to import changes. The reason: First, the polyurethane industry has shifted from the pursuit of extensive expansion in quantity and scale to the intensive growth in pursuit of efficiency and quality. Many large polyurethane enterprises have successfully put into production, reducing their dependence on foreign markets Second, the key technologies of isocyanate and polyester polyol are monopolized by multinational companies such as Bayer, BASF, and Huntsman. my country still needs to import high-tech polyurethane products, and the import volume remains above a certain level. 3. Conclusion 1) my country has become the main consumer market and producer of polyurethane. In the late 1990s, my country's polyurethane products were only 800,000 tons, reaching 3 million tons in 2005. The average annual growth rate from 2005 to 2010 was more than 15%. By 2015, it had reached 10.35 million tons, accounting for 40% of the world's total production and sales. The "Thirteenth Five-Year Plan" put forward the industrial policy of "adjusting structure, changing mode, and promoting development", and my country's polyurethane industry has entered a low-speed growth. In 2021, my country's polyurethane output will be 15.32 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 4.22%. 2) my country's polyurethane product exports are greatly affected by the international economic situation. The main reason is that most of my country's polyurethane products are mid- to low-end products, and most of the exporting countries are developing countries. Therefore, the industry must adjust its development direction, resolve the crisis of overcapacity, accelerate technology research and development, develop high-end, high-performance, and functional products, and enhance product competitiveness. 3) Product application areas are increasingly expanding. Over the years, the production and consumption of polyurethane products in my country have continued to grow. Demand from downstream markets such as home appliances, furniture, transportation, machinery, construction, and new energy drives the growth of consumption of polyurethane products. The industry must develop environmentally friendly polyurethane products, accelerate their application in areas such as building energy conservation, expand the application areas of differentiated, functional, and high value-added spandex fibers, and expand the application areas of TPU. 4) The industrial structure is continuously optimized. With the overcapacity of polyurethane, it is necessary to eliminate industries that are backward in technology and do not meet the requirements of green environmental protection. During the "14th Five-Year Plan" period, the polyurethane industry must promote the continuous optimization of industrial structure, product structure, and layout structure, and gradually solve the problems of unbalanced and inadequate development.

  • In-depth analysis: current situation and prospects of polyurethane industry at home and abroad
    2. Domestic polyurethane industry status 2.1 Development history of domestic polyurethane industry my country's polyurethane industry started late in the late 1950s. In 1958, Dalian Dyestuff Factory developed isocyanate (TDI), and in 1962, it built a production facility with an annual output of 500 tons. In the early 1960s, Jiangsu Chemical Industry Research Institute and others developed polyether-type PU flexible foam. In the early 1970s, Jiangsu Research Institute and Nanjing Rubber Factory developed mixed PU elastomer (MPU). At the same time, Tianjin Chemical Industry Research Institute and Tianjin Paint Factory developed PU coatings. In 1974, Beijing Institute of Construction Engineering developed PU waterproof material, and Jiangsu Institute developed PU waterproof and grouting materials. In 1976, Jiangsu Research Institute and others carried out the research and development of PU track rubber technology, and in 1978, it began to promote it on a large scale in domestic sports venues. In the 1980s, domestic manufacturers successively introduced 10,000-ton polyether production equipment. For example, Yantai Synthetic Leather Factory introduced PU synthetic leather technology from Japan and a 10,000-ton MDI production equipment. In the 21st century, the polyurethane industry has become one of the fastest growing industries in my country's chemical industry. 2.2 Domestic production and sales of polyurethane The output of my country's polyurethane industry from 2014 to 2021 is shown in Figure 4. It produced 966 tons in 2014, 10.35 million tons in 2015, 10.85 million tons in 2016, and 11.89 million tons in 2017, maintaining a compound annual growth rate of 7.28%. The output in 2020 will be approximately 14.7 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 7.6%, and will reach 15.32 million tons in 2021, a year-on-year increase of 4.22%. my country's polyurethane consumption was approximately 9.6 million tons (including solvent content) in 2014 and approximately 12.4 million tons in 2020, a year-on-year increase of 4.6%. During the "Thirteenth Five-Year Plan" period, the polyurethane industry showed moderate growth. According to the "China Polyurethane Industry Operation Status Analysis and Investment Strategy Research Report (2023-2030)" by Guanyan Report Network, polyurethane consumption in 2021 will be 12.63 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 1.85%, of which polyurethane soft foam consumption accounts for 27 %, the main application areas include car seats, furniture, fabric padding, etc., polyurethane rigid foam consumption accounts for 26%, mainly used in thermal insulation fields such as refrigerators and freezers, cold chain logistics, as well as building exterior wall insulation and energy saving. . 2.3 Domestic polyurethane consumption distribution The consumption situation of polyurethane products in my country in 2014 is shown in Figure 5. Polyurethane foam accounts for the largest proportion, about 40% (soft foam 20.82%/hard foam 18.90%), synthetic leather slurry accounts for 21.91%, coatings account for 16.30%, adhesives and sealants account for 5.04%, and elastomers account for 4.12%. The consumption situation in 2021 is shown in Figure 6. Polyurethane foam still accounts for the most, about 53% (soft foam 27%/hard foam 27%), elastomers account for 20%, coatings account for 16%, and adhesives and sealants account for 6%. Comparing the proportion of consumption in 2014 and 2021, it can be seen that polyurethane foam (including soft foam and hard foam) is still the product with the largest proportion in my country's polyurethane consumption, and the proportion of hard foam and soft foam is increasing. Body is the product with the largest growth rate, the proportion of coatings is relatively stable, and the proportion of synthetic leather slurry continues to decline, which is consistent with the international consumption trend of polyurethane.

  • In-depth analysis: current situation and prospects of polyurethane industry at home and abroad
my country's polyurethane industry started in the late 1950s and has now become the largest producer and consumer of polyurethane. At present, my country's polyurethane production is regionally concentrated, and has formed four regions: the Yangtze River Delta centered on Shanghai, the Pearl River Delta centered on Guangdong, the Bohai Rim and the Northeast region centered on Huludao, and the Northwest region centered on Lanzhou. In the future, the southwest region centered on Chongqing and the Hercynian region centered on Quanzhou will be added in the future. As the industry develops, many problems have emerged, such as overcapacity, few high-end products, and serious product homogeneity. These problems have seriously affected the international competitiveness of my country's polyurethane industry and need to be resolved urgently. Polyurethane (PU) is an organic polymer product produced by the chemical reaction of isocyanate and active hydrogen. Its properties can be adjusted in a wide range, such as from sponge to elastomer, from paint to sealant, from shoe sole slurry to spandex and more. 1. The status of the international polyurethane industry 1.1 Development History of International Polyurethane Industry In 1937, German Otto Bayer first discovered that polyurethane could be produced by the addition polymerization of polyisocyanates and polyol compounds. After World War II, the United States, Britain, Japan and other countries introduced German technology for the production and development of polyurethane. In 1945, the American Dupont Company and Monsanto Company built a 2,4-toluene diisocyanate test workshop for the production of rigid polyurethane foam. In 1946, the United States carried out research on rigid polyurethane foam, and the products were used in aircraft sandwich panels. In 1952, Bayer conducted a pilot test of polyester-based flexible polyurethane foam. From 1952 to 1954, it developed a continuous method to produce polyester-based flexible polyurethane foam, and developed corresponding production equipment. In 1955, Japan introduced German and American technology and began the production of polyurethane resin. In 1957, the British company ICI developed polyester-type rigid polyurethane foam using diphenylmethane diisocyanate as raw material. In 1961, Bayer Company used polyisocyanate PAPI with low vapor pressure to prepare rigid polyurethane foam, which improved the performance of rigid products and reduced the toxicity during construction, and applied it to the on-site spraying process, expanding the application of rigid foam scope. In the early 1970s, thermoplastic PU elastomer (TPU) was successfully researched. In the early 1980s, PU engineering plastics came out, and the PU industry showed a new look. In the 1990s, polyurethane spray elastic materials developed rapidly and became a coating for large-area painting projects. 1.2 International Polyurethane Production International polyurethane production has been rising steadily. According to statistics, the total global polyurethane output in 2014 was about 21.5 million tons, and the proportions of various products are shown in Figure 1. Materials accounted for 16.28%, polyurethane coatings accounted for 15.12%, polyurethane elastomers accounted for 9.30%, spandex accounted for 2.33%, and polyurethane sealants and adhesives accounted for 3.49%. The development of fine chemical products such as polyurethane products has been regarded by various countries, especially developed countries, as one of the key strategies for upgrading and adjusting the traditional chemical industry structure, and diversification and refinement are regarded as the development direction of the chemical industry. By 2018, the global polyurethane production is about 23.07 million tons. At present, the growth of polyurethane is stable, and the global polyurethane production will exceed 25.7 million tons in 2022. According to data from BCC Research, the global proportion of various types of polyurethane products in 2021 is shown in Figure 2. Polyurethane foam still accounts for the largest proportion, about 61% (flexible foam 37% / rigid foam 24%), and polyurethane elastomers account for 15%, coating agents accounted for 10%, polyurethane sealants and adhesives accounted for 8%, polyurethane synthetic leather pulp, spandex, etc. accounted for 6%. Comparing the production situation in 2021 with that in 2014, the proportion of polyurethane foam, elastomers, adhesives and sealants production increased by more than 5%, while the proportion of coatings decreased. 1.3 International Polyurethane Sales Volume In 2014, foam plastics accounted for 63% of the total global polyurethane consumption, concentrated in Western Europe (18%), the United States (15%) and China (30%); elastomers accounted for approximately 800,000 tons, concentrated in China, Western Europe and the United States ; The consumption of shoe resin exceeds 3 million tons, concentrated in China; the consumption of coatings (including solvents) is approximately 3.5 million tons, concentrated in China (41%), Western Europe (23%) and the United States (17%). It can be seen that the global polyurethane consumption areas are concentrated in China, the United States and Western Europe. From 2019 to 2022, the global polyurethane consumption scale will generally maintain an upward trend year by year, with an average annual growth rate of about 6.7%. According to data from Agilentel Research, the global polyurethane market size is shown in Figure 3. It increased steadily from 2016 to 2019, declined slightly in 2020, and then showed an upward trend. From 2016 to 2021, the average annual compound growth rate was 7.1%, reaching 665 million yuan in 2022.

  • Lightweight polyurethane foam won the Altair Enlighten Award
Michigan-based global technology company Altair and the Center for Automotive Research (CAR) have nominated Marelli's polyurethane foam for interior products as the 2023 Altair Enlighten Award winner in the Future of Lightweighting category. Altair is a global leader in computational science and artificial intelligence (AI), providing software and cloud solutions for simulation, high-performance computing (HPC), data analytics and artificial intelligence. Marelli has developed a new lightweight polyurethane foam that can be used in all foam-in-place (FIP) applications, especially for main instrument panels. This result was developed together with its materials partner Covestro. 40% weight reduction Compared to the foam currently in use, the new foam is 40% lighter with new tools (8% weight reduction when using existing tools); 50% reduction in foam thickness to support aesthetic styling; Raw material costs were reduced by 20%. In line with the industry's ongoing focus on sustainable and eco-friendly materials, the new foam also reduces the environmental impact of automotive production by reducing the amount of material used per part, reducing density and reducing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by 80%. In addition to bringing environmental benefits, this lightweight foam meets or exceeds customer requirements for high-quality haptics and appearance of interiors. Foam-in-place (FIP) technology is a staple technology in automotive interiors, effectively achieving the soft-touch feel required for major contact surface parts such as main instrument panels, door panels, and center console armrests. Solvay's Ajedium PEEK slot liner was runner-up Solvay Specialty Polymers' Ajedium PEEK slot liner was the runner-up in the "Lightweighting of the future" category. Its Ajedium PEEK slot liner reduces battery pack weight by 12 kg (36.4 lbs) and motor weight by 4 kg (8.8 lbs). In addition, since the PEEK tank liner can be inserted through existing equipment, there is no need for high-power dust collectors or climate-controlled storage to prevent moisture absorption, reducing energy consumption. As EV manufacturers are increasing system voltages from 400 volts to 800 volts or higher, traditional paper laminate groove liners are no longer able to meet the challenges posed by this trend. "In comprehensive simulation tests, Ajedium PEEK films have proven their outstanding properties to improve the thermal, electrical and mechanical properties of the channel lining, while enabling thinner secondary insulation and providing a more sustainable mono-material solution," said Solvay's Head of Automotive Marketing. " Ajedium PEEK provides excellent electrical insulation and heat dissipation, as well as improved thermal management efficiency, enabling designers to reduce the size of aluminum castings and create more sustainable electric motors with less energy and material consumption. In addition, PEEK film has excellent chemical resistance to automatic transmission fluids (ATF) and good adhesion to varnishes. It also eliminates the need for dust collection equipment and climate-controlled storage, reduces energy costs, and improves workspace conditions. Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) is a type of polymer resin that is known for its flexibility, durability, and versatility. It is a thermoplastic material, which means it can be melted and reprocessed multiple times without losing its original properties. TPU is commonly used in various industries, including automotive, electronics, footwear, and sportswear. It is often used to make products such as phone cases, cables, hoses, seals, gaskets, and inflatable structures.
